Kevin Holland, a brother from the L.A. Church of Christ spoke to our congregation during a Sunday service three weeks ago. His lesson was on how to grow from our challenges. One challenge which plagued me most of my childhood was growing up with a disability. As a result, I was never pushed to do much; therefore, I never believed in myself.
Being a "Warrior Princess"
Last Thursday, our great friend Shawn Patterson launched her flagship “Next Level: Women’s Empowerment Conference” and it was truly a sight to see. Led by some incredible speakers, entrepreneurs, leaders, and fighters, this conference left anyone who attended with a drive to go out into the world and shine as brightly as they could.
We were particularly excited because one of the main speakers in this conference was our very own Lisa Johnson! Lisa gave an incredible lesson titled “Warrior Princess”, and to say it was inspiring is an understatement.

Response to the Letter
Hi everybody, hope you're safe and well and getting ready to have communion somewhere with loved ones. We will focus on the Lord, but it does seem appropriate to acknowledge that we will take a few moments to share about the recent events surrounding a letter sent to us about our relationship changing within the Northwest Family of Churches.
Prayer Midweek
Peacemakers Workshop Update
As you know Oregon is currently experiencing unprecedented forest fires along with hazardous air quality. Due to the emergent and developing situation we unfortunately need to postpone the release of the Racial Reconciliation small group workbooks and the associated media at this time. We as a church remain committed to this project and we will notify you those of you that registered for this event by email as soon we are ready to move forward. Please continue to pray for the victims of the Westcoast fires and thank you for your patience.
Vision Group Introduction
We kicked things off with a few group meetings in order to hear the concerns, needs and wants of the congregation via the current leaders in the church. After receiving feedback, we then compiled key themes which reoccurred throughout all of the feedback. These key themes turned into what we are calling vision groups to help address each key theme effectively within our congregation.

Thank You, Church
To the Portland Church and the people who attended the workshop, thank you for considering this important enough to sacrifice your time and energy. Thank you for no longer being willing to say “Peace, peace where there is no peace” and thank you for taking up the call to through Christ be peace makers.
Also, because of our busy weekend we will not be hosting a Midweek this week! Instead take the opportunity to review the sessions and study them thoroughly. We love you all and will see you next Sunday, Sept 6th!
Peacemakers Workshop Conclusion
Wow, what an incredible weekend we had. So much learning, so much hope, and so much fellowship. We are so encouraged to have ended this workshop with 326 registrations! Each live workshop session had 90-100 viewers (across multiple platforms), and the videos are continually being watched and rewatched around the world! We had participants from New York to Los Angeles, and even some from across the Globe! What a special occasion to come together and learn about black history in America and how this history affects us all.
Peacemakers: A Racial Reconciliation Workshop
On August 29th and 30th, we at the Portland Church are hosting a workshop centered around the idea of Race and Racial Reconciliation. Our guest speaker, Dr. Michael L. Patterson, a professor in History from the prestigious Morehouse College, will bring to us three incredible sessions filled with history, understanding, and forward-thinking. We will learn about the history of Black Americans, from before slave traders to today, with a special emphasis on the race-related history of the Pacific Northwest. Join us as we learn how to break down the racial walls society has erected, and how we can better continue our internal transformation as Christians.

The Disciple and Social Justice
In light of recent events, we believe setting aside some time to discuss the topics of discipleship and social justice is incredibly important. Join us this evening as we sit down with some of those in our community. We will use this time to listen to each other, share our stories, and discuss these topics and how we can better view and understand scripture during this time.
Invite your friends! We will be live on our Facebook page, Youtube, and our Website at 7:30 pm PST this evening. We will be recording this event and will be publishing it on our various platforms after we conclude our meeting!

The Brother Show with Mike Taliaferro
We are ending the Brother Show on a bit of a mellow note as we honor the life of Leslie "Jockey" Johnson, Steve Johnson's father. Leslie was a great man of faith and made a tremendous impact on the lives of everyone around him. The episode for this evening is a wonderful conversation between good friends on how we can keep the faith throughout our lives, just as Leslie did.
