It is often said that we fear what we don't understand, and this phrase rings particularly true in discussions of race and race-relations inside Church communities. How do we begin learning, when there is so much we don’t understand collectively? The answer - we must take the first step towards educating ourselves and opening up our hearts to our community.
On August 29th and 30th, we at the Portland Church are hosting a workshop centered around the idea of Race and Racial Reconciliation. Our guest speaker, Dr. Michael L. Patterson, a professor in History from the prestigious Morehouse College, will bring to us three incredible sessions filled with history, understanding, and forward-thinking. We will learn about the history of Black Americans, from before slave traders to today, with a special emphasis on the race-related history of the Pacific Northwest. Join us as we learn how to break down the racial walls society has erected, and how we can better continue our internal transformation as Christians.
We hope that this workshop can encourage many as we strive to be the church Jesus taught about in Matthew 28:18-28. This event is welcome to all and will be hosted via live stream on Facebook, Youtube, and at PortlandChurch.org. Register today at www.peacemakersworkshop.co!
